FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Residential Structure Fire
3725 N Illinois Ave
At approximately 11:33pm last night, our department was notified of a residential structure fire with entrapment at the address listed above. Peoria Heights Police arrived initially and relayed to responding fire companies that heavy black smoke was coming from the residence. Peoria Heights Police also attempted an initial rescue but were pushed out of the residence by heavy smoke and high heat conditions. Command 600 arrived shortly after PHPD and found heavy black smoke coming from the front door and heavy black smoke with small amounts of fire coming from a window on the right side of the house. Engine 653 arrived shortly after Command 600 and stretched a line to contain/extinguish the fire while simultaneously searching for the occupant that was believed to be inside. Mutual aid companies from Peoria IL Fire Department, West Peoria Fire Protection District, Chillicothe Community Fire Protection District, and Limestone Fire Departmentassisted Peoria Heights crews with fire attack, search, salvage, and overhaul activities. Advanced Medical Transport provided an ambulance to stand by for any injuries.
Fire crews located the occupant after a primary and a thorough secondary search of the residence. Unfortunately, at the time crews were able to locate the occupant, the occupant was beyond help and was declared deceased at the scene by the Peoria County Coroner’s Office. No other injuries or fatalities were reported. The fire was contained to the building of origin, with heavy fire damage to one of the bedroom and heavy smoke damage throughout the rest of the building. Time from initial dispatch to the fire being declared under control was approximately 20 minutes according to documentation in the computer-aided dispatch system.
Due to the fatality, this fire is currently under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Illinois State Police Criminal Investigation Division. No additional information is available to be released until their investigation is completed.
